1. Background

MoFund Africa, through the Africa Impact Academy (AIA), supports high-impact social enterprises and nonprofits across Africa in their journey to scale, attract investment, and build operational resilience. The program is currently onboarding its first cohort of ventures from Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. While the selection process has identified promising enterprises, there remains a critical need to validate the authenticity of applicant data, structure investment readiness pathways, and design investor engagement mechanisms tailored to the diverse financial needs of the cohort.

To address this, MoFund Africa seeks to engage a consultant with experience in early-stage investment, impact verification, blended finance strategy, and ecosystem facilitation to lead a 6-month engagement that will design and implement key investment infrastructure for the Africa Impact Academy.

2. Objectives of the Assignment

  • To design a low-cost, scalable verification system for enterprises selected into the AIA.
  • To develop an investment archetype framework categorizing enterprises based on capital needs, risk profiles, and legal structures.
  • To structure and facilitate sector-specific and thematic deal rooms connecting AIA enterprises with aligned impact investors.
  • To propose a model for individualized investment marketing, including strategic partnerships with venture philanthropists and catalytic funders.

3. Scope of Work

A. Verification of Applicant Data 

  • Develop a framework for enterprise validation (e.g., legal documents, physical site checks, reference checks, digital footprint analysis).
  • Recommend low-cost verification methods that can be deployed in collaboration with local hubs or partners, and the program team
  • Propose a verification timeline aligned with the AIA’s training phases.

B. Investment Archetyping & Capital Pathways 

  • Develop investment personas for different types of enterprises (e.g., early-stage nonprofit, grant-transitioning hybrid, impact-first for-profit).
  • Map each archetype to relevant capital instruments (e.g., grants, recoverable grants, revenue-based finance, equity, concessional debt).
  • Create a diagnostic tool that helps each enterprise identify its investment readiness level and suitable capital pathway.

C. Structuring Investor Deal Rooms 

  • Design a framework for virtual and in-person deal rooms, categorized by country, sector, and organization type (nonprofit, for-profit).
  • Engage with impact investors and venture philanthropy networks to identify aligned funding windows.
  • Recommend metrics and systems to track deal room performance, outcomes (e.g., MoUs, funding commitments, due diligence starts).

D. Individualized Investment Marketing Strategy 

  • Propose a marketing strategy to position AIA as a pipeline builder for impact investors.
  • Design sample investment briefs or pitch templates that enterprises can customize.
  • Develop a strategy to engage venture philanthropists and catalytic capital partners, articulating AIA’s value in de-risking early-stage investments.

5. Consultant Profile

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in impact investing, venture building, or capital advisory for early-stage enterprises in Africa.
  • Demonstrated expertise in investment readiness programming, capital matching, and ecosystem facilitation.
  • Familiarity with blended finance and philanthropic funding instruments.
  • Experience working with both nonprofit and for-profit social enterprises.
  • Strong networks with impact investors, DFIs, philanthropic capital providers.
