Frequently asked questions
This page answers general questions about MoFund Africa. For questions about a specific programme, go to the programme FAQs.
What does MoFund Africa do?
We find African-founded organisations doing real work on small budgets, spend ten months making them fundable through the Africa Impact Academy, fund the ones that are ready through the Africa Bridgeworks Fund, and track what the funding produced using SikaIQ.
Who do you work with?
Community-embedded changemakers, meaning African-founded, locally based organisations solving a defined local problem, usually operating on annual budgets between $10,000 and $100,000. Both non-profits and for-profit social enterprises.
Where do you work?
We are based in Kenya and we work across East, West and Southern Africa. Cohort 1 of the Academy ran in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, and Cohort 2 adds Zambia.
When was MoFund Africa founded?
In 2023.
How is MoFund Africa funded?
Through grant income from funders and foundations, and through consultancy and training work. Our financial statements are published in the annual report, and full audited accounts are available on request.
How do you decide who receives funding?
Nobody receives funding on the strength of an application. Organisations complete ten months in the Africa Impact Academy first, and grant decisions rest on that record. Graduates are assessed for readiness, and only those assessed as ready are considered for capital.
Who governs MoFund Africa?
A management board responsible for oversight, strategy and financial accountability, supported by an advisory board with experience in finance, law, governance and international development.
How can I get involved?
Fund the work, apply to the Academy if you run an eligible organisation, request access to SikaIQ, or partner with us on programmes and research.
